Hey Pat,

I have been paddling OC1 and the Otter almost a year now. I really like the boat. It has a good combination of stability and responsiveness that I like. The edges will get you though if your not paying attention. I added an electric bilge pump and looking to add some foam padding to the sides.

I missed Rivers Week and instead drove up to Prince George with friends for a 5 day playboat workshop with Lyle, which greatly improved my paddling skills. Would like to go take his advanced course someday. He is a great instructor. He also paddles an Otter as well as a custom, cut down Clipper viper and we had both Otters out on a couple of those days which was a lot fun, especially to see what he could do with the boat. I haven't had much time to work on my roll, still very weak and I need to start going to pools sessions again. I was getting some nice rolls in the lake this summer.

We are now in winter paddling season, mixed with skiing. Six of us ran the Koksilah River just before Christmas. First time for me and two other. The other 3 hadn't paddled it in a couple years. It needs a good amount of rain for a runnable level and is hit and miss. Beautiful run, can't wait to do it again.
If you follow this link to the VCKC newsletter,
there is a picture of me in the Otter running burnt bridge drop on the Kok.

Looking forward another great paddling year in 2010 (Nahanni year for us!!).

Seems to be no info around on this boat. Has anyone paddled one?
I'm looking for my first WW OC1 and would like something light, plus they are relatively local. Mostly for paddling local rivers on Vancouver Island. Zephyr looks like a nice boat but they are pricey.

I’m going to resurrect this post for kinda the same reasons. I’ve been toying with getting a play boat for a couple years. I used to do some ww kayaking and canoe tripping but only just got back to canoeing a couple years ago. I move around a lot so it’s hard to get into any community of paddlers (hopefully that’s settling down soon). I wasn’t going to get a solo boat till I was more settled somewhere but with what’s going on it looks like I’ll have a lot of time this summer. I live right on a mellow class 1 river so could get out for fitness and build good basic skills.

There’s talk of this being a small boat but it’s been ten years so not sure if it’s still considered small. I’m 5’10 150lbs too so not the biggest guy. Thoughts about this as a fist OC1 with being a bit smaller and having past paddling experience and being fairly fit? It would be my first solo canoe. Hellman is local to BC and has been good to deal with before. A used boat would be ideal price wise so I’ll keep an eye out as well.
