In the cartespleinair, there are references to RI, RII, RIII, RIV. I understand those :) But there are also SIV. If that's a class 4 rapid, why wouldn't it be RIV? Why the 'S'?

Thanks,

Allan.

S is for Seuil (in french) which is Ledge in english.

So Ledge class 4.

The use of the "S" designation is very informative (once you know what it means of course). Often on the Quebec maps you will see a continuous rapid section marked RI/RII/SIV/RIII, on many maps this might be marked simply as RIV (or C4), what it means is this rapid starts as a Class I, then becomes a Class 2 and then a Class 3 with a single Class 4 drop between the 2 & 3.

If this river was unknown to me I would plan to run the top cautiously with the intent to pull out to scout or line the ledge before continuing to run the remaining portion. Depending on what comes after the "S" I might be looking to run the whole thing knowing that the 4 portion is "only" a single drop as opposed to a simple designation RIV (C4) which isn't really very informative.

From my experience the S ratings go something like this (water levels would have a big impact)

SI - Ledge 1 - 1.5 feet
SII - Ledge 1.5 - 2.5 feet
SIII - Ledge 2.5 - 4 feet
SIV - Ledge 4 - 6 feet
SV - Ledge 6 - 10 feet
SVI - Ledge 10 - 100 Feet

I'm happy running RIII's scouting from the water but I'd want to look at an SIII, I'll run an RIV after scouting but rarely run an SIV unless I know there is virtually nothing but calm water downstream and no keeper hole at the bottom of the ledge.

I've done so much tripping in Quebec that I always translate "English" style notations to Quebecois.

The S in SIV means there's likely a Souse hole so Stop

Thanks for all the great information. It's much appreciated. I've been thinking about doing the Lievre at the beginning of July, and it's nice to understand the map :)

Another one. Would Cordelle mean lining?

Thanks,

Allan.
