That's an excellent interview. Mr Frese seems to be a very engaging person.

Thanks for posting the link, watersong.

How about we move this thread to the new Media Room forum, under the subforum "Internet-Based - You Tube, Blogs etc."

Ralph is an icon in North American paddling. It is a seriously memorable experience to have spent some time in his Canoe Shop chatting about canoeing, and canoes. It's been many years since I last talked with Ralph, but he appears both in print and on the news in Chicago anytime a canoeing or local river conservation issue pops up.

As an aside, Ralph is the designer of Old Town's Canadienne 16 and 17, and has made many fiberglass replicas of Voyageur great canoes for reinactments, educational programs, etc.

Thanks for resurecting this link..

well that was certainly charming and enlightening! I never thought of paddling as a harmless way of transport like that. His shop and storage areas are sure inspiring too.

This is the second WTTW Special I have seen on Ralph. I was in his shop this summer, he was trying to convince me that small tippy solo boats were a fad and impractical (as he often does when I go in to his shop), and he sat me down to watch one of these specials on a small TV monitor in the shop. He has many videos to watch if people just want to go in and shoot the breeze. Such great pride of accomplishment and a fitting tribute. I was very happy to see him honored in such a well done special (and give some exposure to canoeing history and culture in Chicago). He really has the only shop in the area (a legacy of the ma and pa stores and made Chicago seem small and filled up neighborhoods with immigrants and new opportunities). He is one of the greats of canoeing history, and I feel privileged to have him in my back yard.

You can check out his shop on-line.

Alas ... he's retiring, in the process of selling his venerable shop, and here is a link to a second video on Mr. Canoe.

Ralph's been trying to sell that shop for 10+ years. At one point he had atleast strongly potential buyers which I believe were some of his former employees. Of course that arrangement fell apart and as so often happens with canoe shops (and canoe manufacturers as well) it ends up back with the guy that started it. I suspect that CCB will eventually die with Ralph, as it will be impossible for him to find someone who will guide it forward .
