Splake. Caught Sunday morning less than 6' under. Awesome dinner with not even salt added for flavour. Nothing tastes like fresh wild death. :P

I think I left the fishing rod in the parking lot or maybe at the bottom of the hill at Big East. If you're there and find an Ugly Stick with a really old klunky reel, give it to some kid. That's not the lure that caught the fish, but it's a good one all the same.

I've seldom fished for splake and only ever caught a few, but I've caught brookies and lakers on all those lures at one time or another. Does that count?

Well, you were in the Park, and would have paid hommage to the local favourite, of course. But the question is, had you switched-up to something else when you hooked it? I'm guessing yes, because there is only one, and if they were hitting like crazy you wouldn't have bothered to spend much time trying other things....

So, if not the EGB, then what? If you were casting, I'd guess the Cleo, because it's a little heavier and casts a little farther than the EGB, and you would have been trying to cover more water.... ?

There are quite a few lakes up here stocked with splake. I've caught them up to 8 pounds....they can pull a canoe around like a chariot. My biggest ones have always been caught still fishing with worms...single sinker and a hook, fished right on bottom. The big ones are more similar to lakers, and hang deep. The smallest nibble is often the biggest fish. Anyway, I'm done with bait fishing this year, back to the flyrod, and those splake lakes are now being stocked with rainbows, which play up top a lot more.

Well, no Temagami Specks on the menu last week. Oh well. It's still very cold and I've a whole host of other excuses.

The answer was Mooselooks trolled dead slow, like I stopped to light my smoke.
