The censoring thing is just single stick open boat humor. You know....."Moving to the dark side" or "Half the stick" kind of thing.

Don't get us wrong we certainly see the value in decked double bladed paddling. That was a prim factor in the development of our daughters paddling progression, and it most certainly worked. Our oldest who has just turned 18 is the only one on the National Team to have made the team in both disciplines, C1 and K1 and a three time National Junior Champion in WC1. As a first university student in a five year concurrent Kinesiology/Bachelor of Education, one of her goals is to be the youngest Master Instructor in the Paddle Canada program.

Those who enjoy whitewater open boating should give this event some consideration. It attracts some of the best whitewater canoeists in eastern North America.

The film showed some of the more difficult runs, such as the Watauga Gorge, and the Little River "Sinks" section, but there are typically enough folks showing up to make multiple different runs of varying levels of difficulty in the same day.

It is one of the few times you will see well over 100 whitewater open boaters in the same place, and even watching 50+ boaters race down the Tellico Ledges is a scream.

That is some crazy stuff and looks like WAY to much fun.
I would love to have the skills to do half of that.

This video is an absolute riot to watch - and at the same time a demo of extreme skill, it's like top acrobats performing. Even better, at least for me...

I also enjoy to observe the shift of paddle fun across generations. Paul's dad Bill developed a style to present the joy of the paddle, and Paul himself has found his own way to get the message out. It's the style of Paul's generation, and we older folks just stand back shake our head in amazement. There's sincere respect, even though there's no desire to copy.

By the way, Ian Tamblyn's music bridges the two ways to enjoy paddling. Nice!

Yup Dan is correct, Paul, Andrew, Mark, and myself are some of the old dudes that have just made the 50's club. My avatar is of me dropping Baby Falls on the Upper Tellico about 5 years ago. I must say its way too much fun and I'll be back again this spring! The youngsters in the paddling start pretty early these days. I now both my daughters were dropping those rivers in solo open boats when they were 10 and 11 years old, my youngest made the front cover of American White Water as she dropped baby falls four years ago in open canoe. I think the coolest part of it all, is the closeness of the open boat community, its very different then the kayak community.
