I don't want to speculate but there are a couple of low head dams not far upstream from this location.

If this is where i think it is(just south of terra cotta) there are some wild rapids when the water is high. Unbelievably sad news this morning.

Finding the boats on ice in the river is bad news.
Water temps would be awfully close to freezing.
Too many questions, type of boats, did they have protective gear.
As for grade of white water, the river gauges say the river was far from high, would not have even put the river in the mid range.
That said if there was ice jams and they are moving, it adds a lot of dynamics to the situation. With the type of thaw we had the ice would not have had time to get to the "candle" stage where it breaks up quickly. Stuck in an ice flow is hazardous.
In the late 60's we found a canoe on top of a large ice below Dundas, we tried to use a golf course bridge to get to the other side where the boat was close.
Needless to say the jam moved and the boat disintegrated.

Another possibility is that with the quick thaw the "anchor" ice may have still been attached to the bottom of the river which raises the possibility of becoming entrapped should one exit the boat.

Rapids in the area are CI and barely CII at those levels.
It is always sad when stuff like this happens.

For those that don't understand how river ice can form and stick to the bottom, it only took a couple of days of low water levels to get over 1m thick during that short cold snap we had.
This at Streetsville park where our slalom used to run starting from the east side looking back at the parking lot.
The open pan shot is that of the soccer fields in the middle of the island, the river bed has frozen and the water has to go some where.
Growing up on the Credit this is where we learned never to trust the river ice, even in the cold.
This is where most paddlers start their river run.

This is a little scary to hear, especially given that I'd been contemplating a run down the credit this past weekend, in the exact same area.

My company owns a property at Mississauga Rd & King street and I'd scouted the river from shore and several bridges nearby - for the most part it looked open with moderate flow. It's obvious there's still a danger of ice and strainers, but it didn't look overwhelmingly perilous. I hope they come out with some more details as the investigation moves forward.

I know we all want to get out and paddle... but it doesn't end well for at least 1 or 2 people per year. Best to just wait it out in my opinion.

Live to paddle another day.

No sense in second guessing here the whole story will eventually appear.

Such a shame. I grew up next to the headwaters of the Credit and currently live close to where it terminates in Lake Ontario. I don't think a lot of people realize how dangerous this little local river can be. This isn't the first incident this fall/winter, either. I've watched Andrew run sections of it at high water in a playboat and that scared the crap out of me.
