So my family will be in the Smithers area this summer. We're spending a week on Vancouver Island, then taking the ferry up to Prince Rupert and spending a week with friends in Smithers.

Is there a canoe trip we could do in the general Smithers area? I'd be willing to drive 3-400km. Could be a lake trip or a river trip that lasts 4-7 days.

thanks

Our favourite is Nanika-Kidprice canoe route near Houston.
Another would be Swan Lake north of Kitwanga.

While you're in town come on over to Burns Lake.
You can rent mountain bikes and try our amazing bike park on Boer Mnt. There are free campsites there too.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks Ted,

Are there any canoe rental places in the area? I can likely borrow most of the camping gear I don't bring from home, but not sure they have a good canoe.

And bugs? Your post from a few years ago states they are pretty bad. We'll be there at the end of July. Define pretty bad!

thanks

Rab,

As far as rentals, I'm not too sure.
Maybe Aquabatics (paddling store) or Roger at Northern Sun Tours. (both in Smithers)
Another might be Trevor Sowers in Houston. (haven't heard action from him in a while)

End of July the bugs should be dwindling off. Mosquitoes have just showed up here.
I'm a wimp with bugs and fear the sun so I always have my bug shirt on.

We're planning a trip there July 24th-27th.

Thanks Ted,
I might just be there around the same time. Do I need to make a booking? Campsites are designated or first come first serve?

thanks

Rab,

You don't need a booking and sites are first come first serve.
Get a map. There are larger campsites marked and these have lots of room.
Even the smaller ones have spots to squeeze in.

We'll be in an ultralight tripper along with a green prospector. We may have others, but those two are guaranteed.

Hope to see you out there.

Thanks again Ted,
When you say get a map - do you mean a topo map, the pdf map available on the BC Parks website, or another map?

thanks

Rab,

Stop by a visitor centre in Smithers or Houston and they'll have an excellent handout with all of the sites marked.

Probably one or two on the internet too.
