View topic - Advice On First Solo Canoe

@open_side_up I'm looking for a tandem that I can solo.

Over 65lbs is going to be too heavy. My tripping will involve short portages. No 500m-1k portages for this old guy.

I can't get it just yet I'm laid up off my feet with a medical issue at the moment.

Sorry to hear that you are out of commission for a bit.

Was going to suggest that you take a look at this Bob's Special. They're asking more than I'd pay for a f-glass canoe (my personal gold standard is $1000 for a 50lb kevlar), but maybe there's some wiggle room on the price.

Other tandem canoes that lend themselves to solo paddling might be a Swift Mattawa with a kneeling thwart or a small prospector.

Right, other posters are saying selling price on a used canoe should be around half price give or take considering the selling configuration..

Looking at a Scott Echo 16ft, with about a 1ft long obvious fibreglass repair at the water line.
Seller calls it a 'robust repair'

Seller sold another Scott canoe, same issue. I feel I should go for it.

Is it worth the risk?

You probably weren't thinking about a cedar canoe, but since there's not been many postings and it sounds like you want to get on the water, this one in Renfrew looks interesting. Make yourself a set of portage pads, and you're ready to go.

I just found a 16' Trailhead 50lb with a very comfortable yoke. (they claimed it was a Trailhead but there are no tallies or marketing/manufact. ID to be seen. ) A little more than I could pay, but managed. Getting it on and off my Jeep is almost a breeze. They said it was a fiberglass layout, single keel, the hull quite scratched and used in Algonquin. They said it handled well, purchased at Trailhead Ottawa.

It kind of looks and feels like what appears as Nova Craft's aramid, though I've never seen a NC aramid layout.

I'm thinking I should put a kneeling thwart in this. As I'm heavy I should take advantage of it's seemingly good secondary stability. But it's an asymmetrical design.

I was trying to find a quiet put-in around Manotick on the Rideau, but all I could find was near the town.

Did take it to Meech Lake at that put-in spot at the end of the road, but the road is in wicked shape. Maybe intentionally left in disrepair.

There must be a HIN etched on the outside of the stern.. the first three characters are letters.. That letter code can be deciphered to find out the manufacturer.. ( not the brander.. its common for stores to plonk their own name on a boat made by someone else.)

...thanks for that info. Will have a close looksee and photograph it. I didn't know to look for a manuf registration number on the hull.
