Greetings Folks, has anyone travelled north along the Grays river into Grays Lake and then into Banks Lake since the fire of 2018? Wondering if this is passable and if there are still campsites?

wilejj, in the absence of any field reports, take a look at this image of the extent of the 2018 fire.

I got the image from this website -

https://earthenginepartners.appspot.com ... bal-forest

A year after the 2018 Pickerel River/Henvey Inlet fire we paddled down the western edge of the affected area - down Fox Creek to Georgian Bay. Signs of new growth were already evident and there were potential camp spots if we had wanted to stop for the day. Your route will definitely take you through an area more affected by the fire but it would still be a memorable paddle. Last September we paddled down the Lady Evelyn River from the Forks but saw no evidence of the fire.

Neither the Google Earth satellite view nor the Ontario Govt. topo website have current images of the area from after the fire so they don't really help.

You can use https://earthengine.google.com/timelapse/ to see what it looks like now, albeit the resolution is not great. A few green patches still on Grays, and one might be close to one of the two previously marked campsites. The campsite at the south end of Banks (and on the island) are probably gone, but the ones at the north end of the lake should be ok.

There is also a video on Youtube called "Paddling the Burnt Lands", albeit not Grays nor Banks. They paddled the Grays River to the long portage to Makobe, and crossed that way.

I wrote a trip report (link below) and some other members offered additional info and follow-up. The fire map that true_north posted above is very accurate. All the sites on Banks Lake are destroyed, save the site at the top of the Grays River heading north, out of Banks L.

Feel free to DM me.
